What was the challenge you were seeking to address?
A couple of years ago, we realized that we needed to grow our fleet. We were leaving a lot of financial resources on the table by renting third-party equipment. When leadership moved me into the fleet management position, I realized that our asset management was limited, particularly due to the constraints of the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution we had in place, which didn’t allow us to manage our fleet properly.
At the time, there were limitations to our approach and how our processes worked, which essentially involved a paper ticket that was scanned, sent to the equipment manager and entered manually each day. Many financial transactions had to be made to rectify human error.
Why did you go with T3 by ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø?
We didn’t really have to make the business case internally. One of the things I knew was that there wasn’t a telematics system encompassing equipment, vehicles and small tools. We could find a solution that provided telematics for fleet trucks or just for equipment, but we never saw a solution for both fleet vehicles and equipment. I recognized that T3 would do all that. It also comes with a platform for reporting issues.
T3 was young and new, and I saw that if we could get involved early, we could influence the telematics technology. T3 was a new platform and a new idea. No one had ever done it before. We could help build it and partner to make it a one-size-fits-all solution for any contractor that works with us.
For companies like ours that are focused on growth, looking to mitigate equipment loss, and wanting to examine the nuts and bolts of where and how their fleet is being used, T3 is the perfect solution. We are excited to see where T3 goes in the future.
How has T3 improved your team or business performance?
On top of trackers, keypads are something that we heavily utilize. We’ve started to make all our projects more efficient with keypads.
For example, one of our projects is on the river in Austin, Texas. Four other high-rises are going up. When you have an 85-story high-rise with dozens of partners on-site in a confined space, the more equipment you put on-site, the less room you have to build the building. We’ve been able to limit the number of equipment pieces on-site by allowing our partners to share equipment with the keypads.
Now we are using keypads with another project in Austin. The site is not as confined as downtown, but it’s limited in maneuverability. We recognized that Flintco doesn’t need a forklift every day and that our partners could use the equipment. With dozens of different companies on the same project that don’t need access to equipment every day, not only are you limiting the number of trucks on-site, but you’re also recouping up to 75% of the overall equipment cost by sharing with the site partners.
Keypads also enable accountability. You don’t know who broke the mirror or ran the asset out of fuel, but with the keypad report, you can start narrowing it down.
We’ve seen our profitability and revenue increase as our fleet has grown. T3 has made us more efficient in our processes. I believe that without the efficiency of the equipment, we wouldn’t see our revenue improve.
How would you sum up T3?
It’s a system of checks and balances. As we grow and try to do different things to be more profitable with our projects, we can go back and check our work. Before, there were no checks and balances with our old system. But now, everything is digital, so there’s a digital trail that we can track to help us learn and improve. That’s one of the primary benefits of T3: checks and balances.
